China's Pan Zhanle set a new world record as he stormed to victory in the men's 100m freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.
"For me, I don't think it means a lot because life continues. For China, I think the gold medal means a lot because this is the first time China has broken a world record at this Games. So it's something we feel happy about," said Pan, "It's a perfect performance. For my training, I focus much more on aerobic exercise than speed. I wanted to improve the second half of the race. We have an analysis team, that analyzes every frame of our technique under the water."
Pan touched the wall in 46.40 seconds, more than a second ahead of Australian Kyle Chalmers, who took silver.
Romania's David Popovici claimed bronze, one hundredth of a second further back.
Pan's time eclipsed his own previous record of 46.80 set in Doha in February.
