The Big Picture : Better Relations - Onus on Pakistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, saying India wants cordial relations with the neighbouring country but for that, it's important to develop an environment of trust, which is devoid of terror. In his letter, written to convey greetings to the people of Pakistan on the country’s National Day, PM Modi said and I quote – “As a neighbouring country, India desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. For this, an environment of trust, devoid of terror and hostility, is imperative.” The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to Imran Khan and the people of Pakistan in dealing with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, PM Modi had wished Imran Khan a speedy recovery after the latter tested positive for coronavirus. According to news reports quoting govt sources the letter is a routine one sent every year. But it comes amid a series of recent events indicating positive movement in ties between India and Pakistan. In February, both countries recommitted themselves to the 2003 ceasefire on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indus Commissioners of India and Pakistan met for the first time in over two years in New Delhi on Tuesday to resolve a host of outstanding issues under the Indus Waters Treaty.
