The Big Picture : Better Relations - Onus on Pakistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, saying India wants cordial relations with the neighbouring country but for that, it's important to develop an environment of trust, which is devoid of terror. In his letter, written to convey greetings to the people of Pakistan on the country’s National Day, PM Modi said and I quote – “As a neighbouring country, India desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. For this, an environment of trust, devoid of terror and hostility, is imperative.” The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to Imran Khan and the people of Pakistan in dealing with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, PM Modi had wished Imran Khan a speedy recovery after the latter tested positive for coronavirus. According to news reports quoting govt sources the letter is a routine one sent every year. But it comes amid a series of recent events indicating positive movement in ties between India and Pakistan. In February, both countries recommitted themselves to the 2003 ceasefire on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indus Commissioners of India and Pakistan met for the first time in over two years in New Delhi on Tuesday to resolve a host of outstanding issues under the Indus Waters Treaty.

if relationship between pak and india goes in right direction in every aspect, it will lead to strengthen both countries. pak is the only barrier of india which at present stop india to reach Central Asia, if relation were good than we can reach central asia and we can easily explore the market which benefits both pak and india. some issues we have need to resolve it will take time but not much difficult to resolve. india is the emerging super in the asia and globally, world has seen our soft and hard power both.

A strong Pakistan is a threat to India in future. In times when Pakistan has been cornered and marginalised, we shouldn't extend a helping hand to Pakistan who is an enemy of the world's oldest surviving Hindu civilisation.

As Dhruv sir mentioned there is no any indication from Pak side to believe that they are serious about peace dialogue, in addition they didnt even refrain from interfering the internal matter of India. They still did not accept the new environment of J&K, even many UN designated terrorist in pakistan are freely roaming and enjoying the celebrity life. So India need to assess for how long even this no fire on boarder agreement persist its just a month or two after the joint DGMO briefing of India and Pakistan. Most probably it can be temporary tactics for getting out of FATF or they simply cant bear the expenses for their terrorist activities in such inflation in pakistan.

The recent development between India and Pakistan is good to improve bilateral relations, However there are points of concerns, such as -

1. Cease fire in Feb.2021 - but it is to early to make any remarks since Pakistan has always being tactile move using its strategic assets (Terror groups).
2. Since abrogation of A-370, Pakistan have been raising this on multilateral engagement like UNGA - which was against Shimla agreement.
3. Not acknowledging the long demands of India for handing over of terrorists for trail & denial.
4. Indus Water treaty & related developments for water sharing.
5. Pakistan's move of passing resolution/Constitutional change with respect to Gil-git baltistan and Infrastructural developments in the region under BRI initiative of China.
6. Citing the pressure of FATF keeping Pakistan in grey list - may be because of this Pakistan taking steps.

India being a strong propounder of Global peace following its value enshrined in constitution A-51, being always took stand ahead of routine work as evident in recent developments.

This is too early to make remarks in the bilateral developments because of recent past incidences of terror. India stand is stand still - Talks and Terror cannot go on hand in hand.

Therefore, GOI need to closely monitor all related bilateral relations developments.
