Highly venomous sea snake found on Hawaii Island beach

The state is urging the public to be careful after a highly venomous yellow-bellied sea snake was found on a Hilo beach last week.

I've seen one of those sea snakes while snorkeling along the Waianae coast back in late 1980's. I used to run into the highly venomous Black-Banded Sea Krait often while diving in Okinawa. During mating season, sometimes these sea snakes would wrap themselves around your snorkel thinking it was a snake.

A good rule of thumb to remember is, "Black and yellow kills a fellow". Also, when identifying which coral snakes are safe and which are deadly, it goes like this: "Red touched black, safe for Jack. Red touches yellow, kills a fellow" (the red, yellow and black bands) I hope no one ever needs to use this but if they do, I hope it helps save a life

It is very rare for these to bite people, should have let it go. When you're diving you can play with them even. They have very small mouths too. If you do get bit, only 3% of bites are fatal. It is so rare! Really sad they killed it. People are so uneducated on these animals. Please stop killing animals because you are uneducated!

They won’t bite without being provoked! That they are highly venomous, does not inherently make them a threat.

They’re pretty much already here…. Just rare.

Me and my friends started seeing them in the 90's when we went out diving the reefs with snorkels. Thank you united states navy for shipping them in your bilge water. Next gift, tree snakes (if they are not here yet, they will be no that Mr T is in charge).
