I could barely hear the difference in most but that cheaper Shure Mic sounded the best on what you did. You are right there are a zillion things that matter for micing, from room size to personal voice to personal projection and on it goes. Yet, in the a paid studio there will be maybe two or three mics available, and the producer will probably not change the one ready to go unless requested. The point being, a crap mic is crap, but a crap performance is too. Remember the mics that musicians used up until the mid 1970s probably are not nearly as good as your 100 dollar mic today and they made it work just fine.
