Long Hot Summer Day

Long hot summer day! This was our closing song, and a very fitting one, as the day of this concert was very, very hot. This is a John Hartford tune, but we modeled our arrangement more from the Sara Watkins version. It's such a fun song and I just love everyone's parts, especially the fiddle. My solo was a bit shaky, in part due to the fact that I was quite tired by the end of the concert, but also I could barely hear myself in the monitor (you can see me at 2:46 trying to hear which notes I'm playing haha) Fortunately, this song is mostly percussion and 2 chords, so it didn't matter too much, and it was nice to just sit and watch my friends rock out. We had quite a few issues with the sound setup that day, as you may have been able to tell from the other recordings I've posted. I go into a bit more detail on that and other behind-the-scenes things in the bonus songs from this set that I've posted to Patreon, so if that interests you, head over and check it out!

Let's all give a massive thanks to my parents and my friend Lex who sat in the direct sunlight in order to record all this footage for me! Especially Lex. She got very sunburnt. She is a true patron of the arts. The band here consists of Mr. Phil on mandolin, Ben on guitar, John on bass, Adelee and Emma on vocals, Nat on fiddle, and yours truly on banjo.

I saw John Hartford perform this in 1978 not far from the Illinois River, still live in the area. Great that his song found appreciation all these years and miles away. Been in all towns he mentions too, but never worked a tow boat. Thanks. I may have missed it, couldn't quite hear it, but the line is 'on a tow boat making up barges'. Good job. Imagine he performed this, clogging his own rhythm, solo fiddle, outdoors, it was probably 90 degrees and humid. That man worked for the audience. Thanks again, I have enjoyed all your tunes, but this one hits my heart. Thanks Phoebe and crew.

All in all, one darn fine show from you all! Loved it all, bad sound and everything. Quite an accomplishment for a young band. You handled it well. And hold on to Nat as long as you can!! Have a great summer.

Again, I say, "Dag." Y'all sound great together. You'll always be our Favorite Internet Banjorina but your whole ensemble can do their thing. Fiddle opening, great vocals silo and harmonizing, mandolin got thos grooves in, and a guitar solo.

Phoebe, you might want to call the folks at Bell Buckle Records. Good people and a great little Bluegrass label.

Thank you for sharing the lime light with your musician friends, Phoebe.
Yet, as for me, even though they were good, I would prefer more joe 🎶.

I always enjoy your music, but I have to comment on something that's always confused me as a Swede. For me as an observer it seems clothing for Americans is completely disassociated from the actual temperatures outside!

A very very hot day and I'm seeing jackets and generally thick clothing! I often think about this when I see movies or clips on youtube from southern california as well. Thick hoodies etc. Makes me wonder if Americans feel heat at all.

Either way, thank you for all the music on your channel, it's lovely.

Phoebe, singers and players need to be able to hear themselves on stage. Stage monitors are critical with large ensembles and amplified guitars and bass. Also the other players need to reduce their intensity when the acoustic instruments are playing and the singer(s) are singing. It is called dynamics. It works well when all of the ensemble listen to everyone else. Still a great performance. :)

Awesome. Your fitting the minstrel banjo quite well Phoebe. You might try an ear bud to hear your banjo being right next to the fiddle Frail on!
