In tonight's episode I am joined by Autograph guitarist, Steve Lynch.

Throughout the 80's Steve was turning heads show after show and making a huge name for himself as an incredible guitarist. Steve is still turning heads today and proves that none of the chops have been lost, nor are the hooks in his killer songwriting.

Tonight we'll discuss the brand new album from Autograph "Get Off Your Ass", as well as touring with Van Halen, David Lee Roth's connection with the band and much more.

Steve taught me how to play guitar in the mid 90's, when he gave lessons at a small music shop in Washington state. I was in my late teens at the time, and just began learning. I remember he would transcribe lessons with pen and paper for me to practice on, was a patient, and had vast knowledge about music along with serious skills. I'm glad a lot of bands from the 80's are reuniting, because good music is timeless and newer generations discover it eventually. For Steve, his talents need to be showcased and I'm glad to see he's performing again . I still have his lessons in an old binder. Something funny to me was I never listened to Led Zepplin before, until he taught me how to play a couple of their songs. He had stories about the Van Halen tour that he shared. I also remember he liked the band, Filter, and that that genre of music would be the next big thing after grunge. He wasn't wrong since it spurned industrial metal and progressive rock years later. One of the funniest things I remember was the kid who had the lesson slot after me, was learning how to play country music from him. Steve always had a no-fun smirk on his face when he arrived for his lesson.

Met Steve years ago at a guitar clinic here in Brisbane Australia. Great guy, fantastic player. Still have his two handed guitarist book. 😎👍🎸

The most under rated guitarist in rock. What a gentleman.

Steve Lynch did a workshop tour in the 80s through Germany which I attended - still have the tabs... great player, his tapping is wicked.

I was fortunate enough to see Autograph open up for Van Halen on Van Halen's 1984 tour and remember seeing Steve play and how blown away I was. A buddy of mine and I got to meet him after the show because he was hanging out in the audience to watch Van Halen. This was before Autograph's first release came out so I had never heard of them or their hit song Turn up the radio.

Great interview. The points presented about the importance of striving to develop your own individual techniques, and focusing on creating your own compositions, is so invaluable and needed today. It seems that copying and mimicry have dominated and stifled artisitic growth in the present day. People are smothering their own individual creativity with all the available external input. So refreshing to hear a truly respected and developed artist and musician speak up about it. Thank you for making this interview possible. Really solid stuff!

He is really cool about not talking about how Van Halen were really divas to them. No disrespect to EVH, RIP, but Steve developed his tapping technique completely separately from Eddie, his inspiration being Emmett Chapman and The Stick vs Eddie. Eddie just broke first and was way bigger than Steve and Autograph, but I saw a interview with Jennifer Batten who corroborated that Steve's tapping had nothing to do with EVH.

I remember the story or at least reading an interview with DLR in Circus or Hit Parader back in 1984 where Dave told Autograph that if they could make it on tour with VH that they would get a record deal. Van Halen notoriously was punishing on opening bands. I remember Velcro getting boo'd off the stage and the drumset blanket getting caught on fire by M80's in the Cow Palace San Francisco. BTO even had problems getting through their set.

Great show Eric. Steve Lynch had a lot of good insight in to playing and the music business. I have been watching your show for over a year now. I have been missing some of the live shows when they are going on. Other things going on around  here, but I always watch them on the sometime in the next day or so.I was look all the way back to your first video from 5 years ago. I want to ask you how you started learning to play the guitar? Self-taught or formal instruction and training in music theory.
