RC’s Take: This group has a ton of experience at the starting spots, but there are some unproven guys at some of the positions. That being said, I think there is a ton of talent in this group

Must Watch Player: Malik Dunlap
The 6’3” Super Senior DB
Was an All-Big 12 second team performer for the Red Raiders in 2022
In the big 12 was second in the conference in passes defended per game and third overall in total passes defended
Long, rangy and athletic corner that creates mismatches on the outside for offense
He’s a top 5 CB in the Big 12 imo and has the potential to be much more if healthy

RC’s Take: One of my bold predictions for Texas Tech this season is that Malik Dunlap will make an All-American team. If he can stay healthy he’s a great corner in the Big 12

Breakouts: CJ Baskerville & Bralyn Lux Jr.
Two transfer that I think will make huge impacts for the Red Raider Secondary
CJ Baskerville transferred from San Diego St
Bralyn Lux Jr transferred from Fresno State
Both long rangy DB’s
Baskerville will be the starting STAR position taking over for Muddy Waters
Lux Jr. is going to potentially start opposite of Dunlap, but also be a heavily used rotation piece

RC’s Take: I truly think these are the two guys that elevate the Tech Secondary to a new level in 2023

Overall Standing of the Position
The leader of the group DaDrion Taylor Demerson who will be the starting FS
The experience in the starting 5 and in most of the two deep can’t go understated.
Two younger guys to watch for Brenden Jordan and Jordan Sanford both 4-Star recruits from the 2022 class could have an impact for this secondary
Communication will be key for this secondary early on
The talent is there for this to be a “build block” type group for the Red Raider defense and team overall in 2023

It is up to the DB coach. We had way too many mental lapses that led to big plays for wide open receivers, if we see that again this year, McGuire needs to replace the DB coach. If we can eliminate 80% of those, then we have a much better chance to win the Big 12.
