Cloud Volume Rendering Using Raymarching in Unity

I was really impressed with Ryan Brucks' Unreal Engine raymarching demos that he published on the Epic forums. Since I'm a Unity user, I wanted to see if the same techniques could be used in Unity, and it totally worked out!

This was just an early test to learn more about Raymarching - I plan to do some more experiments with fluids and pyro in the future.

That's pretty nifty. If it can get performant enough and work well with Unity's upcoming HD rendering pipeline I could see such a technique really pushing the visual fidelity of some of the higher end Unity projects!

Hey John, Just found you while looking for tutorials on 3rd person movement. Bummed that you haven't uploaded in 2 years. It seems that you have a LOT of helpful stuff that I can't wait to watch.

Problem is this is not light on the performance so for things like VR you'd have to throw it out the window. Adding a screen space pass and having a for loop is bad juju for the frag shader.

Oh lol is that iq at the end there? Awesome to get the god of SDF to appear in your raymarch video! I used to work right across the walkway (next to the glass cube). I left the company in 2017.

It looks a lot like Gas clouds in Star Citizen, probably the same technique but the similarities are impressive :D

This is very nice, but probably only useful for post-processed image or video renders, not as a runtime mechanic in a video game.

Very interesting! Although I always wonder, if this can be done in real-time for volumetrics then why aren't games using it more? I don't think I've ever seen a game with real-time ray marched volumetrics in it it before
