For this special holiday installment of Masienda Presents, we joined chef and artist Tony Ortiz on their grandparents' Northern California ranch to cook a traditional family recipe: lamb birria slow roasted in an outdoor oven built by Tony's grandfather, just like the ones that can be found all over his hometown of Zacatecas, Mexico. This is a story of how family recipes can find new life with each new generation.

adore this. wish i could meet Tony & share his food.
mi abuelita del lado de mi mamá es de Zacatecas. i only wish i could have learned so much more from her. as for the barbacoa, my goal is to learn to make it in our specially built pib, but the mercados in San Diego, while they carry plenty of banana leaf, have no pencas! not sure where to even find some.
