The building is high, and the elevator doesn’t go down as fast as you want it to. You shift in place, adjusting your bag over your shoulder, and breathe a deep sigh. Alone, in the elevator, you finally have a moment to breathe. You’re exhausted, and it’s so heavy that it settles into you bones in a way that makes you sleepy. You rub your eyes tiredly and lean against the elevator door.

The old and beaten speakers of the elevator crackle to life quietly, and your ears perk up at the sound. Quietly, a jazz tune plays, accompanied by the meows of a cat.


You smile, and tap your foot with the rhythm. You nod along to the meows.
