I 3d printed a fully mechanical coin sorting machine based off of a 100+ year old design. Standard Johnson Coin Sorter.

It's not slower, the sorting algorithm we humans use is very efficient for small amounts of items we can all see at once, but not very efficient at large amounts of items. The machine is a lot more linear, so given a lot of coins to sort it'd sort them a lot faster than we could even the size it is now

If you look at the older design, you can see it had a guard to keep the coins from falling out, you can see in the video how he’s missing this guard and the coins fall out as he uses it.

I am so sick of most 3d printing channels showing useless garbage so it goes without saying I’m a huge fan of your work. Might have to hop on that Patreon

Now stick a hopper on it and a motor to drive it and now you got your 2 minutes back forever, despite it taking 4 mins. Automation is beautiful

now this is proby what one the best useful prints I’ve seen

Perhaps an improved version of this would be dope

The machine starts to outperform manual sorting if you have enough coins to go through

Calling something that's 100 years old ancient is crazy.

Nice job, looking forward to seeing the next iteration. If there were a way to reliably store the sorted coins in stacks it would help save space and sort more at once without being emptied. Also perhaps a bigger mouth that can hold more. And of course like you said, maybe the gears and size of the slots. Perhaps you could have two sets of slots on one wheel too, or it looks like you might already.
One final thing, maybe different plastic for the gears that would mesh smoother? Or some sanding. Sweet design though! Makes me want to 3d print stuff.

Technology back then was pretty good for 100 years ago

Add bearing (bronze bushings) and race bearings. Makes it nit flimsy.

I got one of these from a thrift store. It slid in coins one by one, and had one of those total counters on top. It rolled it down and sorted them in columns

If you put some sort of resistance on the spinning portion so it has to pause briefly each time a hole is lined up, you should be able to crank tf out of it

I think the machine is faster in the long run because it can work days without a break.

"made of metal... Mine was printed in plastic, so that's a big difference." Biggest difference between those two machine.

Even though its not as fast as someone sorting by hand, it can help an elderly person get the task done. Im sure my grandma wouldve appreciated this. That ol lady would pay for everything in loose change if she could.

I think next, you should build a coin sorter that actually works

Told you I would make him one of these coin sorters 😊

I would add a spring kind of trapdoor that keeps pressure on the coins so it can’t skip over the door it’s supposed to go through
