Kirk was added for defense, pg play and willingness to do the little things. It was a team built not just on Allstars but on actual roster designed to have the right mix players if to win gold against a very good collection of international teams with older inexperienced teams that had been playing together on the international stage. They already scorers with more versatility on the defensive end. Adding Gil just didn't fit with legitimate roster building. Yes he took his revenge but he was never slighted or overlooked. That was Kobe's team along with Wade James Kidd Paul Anthony Redd Prince DeRon. Enough scorers so they added two way players to balance the scorers. Post has scorers and defenders and rebounders to match the international talent. Hell Heinrich didn't even make the final squad. Gil was never going to top the guards list the way everyone knew it was to be constructed. Defense, 2 way ability was a premium
