On this day in 1960 {March 30th} the Olympics performed "(Baby) Hully Gully" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'..
One month earlier on Feb. 1st the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #98, three weeks later it would peak at #72 {for 1 week} and it spent seven non-consecutive weeks on the Top 100...
Arvee Records released "(Baby) Hully Gully" as the B-side of "Private Eye"*, "Private Eye" entered the Top 100 on September 14th, 1959 for a one week stay at #95...
And on the same 'Bandstand' show they also performed "Big Boy Pete", later in 1960 on September 12th it peaked at #50 {for 2 non-consecutive weeks}...
Between 1958 and 1966 the Los Angeles-based doo-wop quartet had fourteen records on the Top 100 chart, one made the Top 10, "Western Movies", it peaked at #8 {for 1 week} on September 15th, 1958...
Founder and lead singer Walter Ward passed away at the age of 66 on December 11th, 2006...
May he R.I.P.
* "Private Eye" was a sequel to their Top 10 hit from 1958, "Western Movies"...

The Olympics are doing the sanitized version of the dance during this performance. The versions people did in the neighborhood were a lot more sensual and suggestive. Legs spread, pelvis thrust out. My mother wouldn’t allow me and my sibs to do the dance. BTW., this may be the only vid on YouTube that shows the black version of the Hully Gully. All the rest of the vids show the much tamer line dance version done by white people back then.

Chubby Checker covered both “ The Hully Gully” and “ Peanut Butter” on his early albums.. I heard both songs by him first.. years would past by before I’d discover the original versions, .

My husband's family used to have a saying : "I'll strip naked and dance the hully gully". I had no idea the hully gully was a real dance, ha ha!

A there's a dance spreadin' round like an awful disease
(After each line) Hully, Hully Gully
Oh well you shake your shoulders and you wiggle your knees
This dance goin' round from coast to coast
When me an my baby do it, tryin' to do it the most.
Momma hully gully, Poppa hully gully,
Baby hully gully too
C'mon lets take a lesson, alright now
Shake your shoulders now, alright
Wiggle your knees now... come on WAIL now
Moma hully gully, Baby hully gully
You can hully gully too
Well I went to a party now and what did they do?
Now everybody's doin' it, now why ain't you?
Everybody looks like he's got the space
Just listen here brothers and as all of you take
A Moma hully gully, Poppa hully gully
And baby hully gully too
Momma hully gully, baby hully
You can hully gully too!
