This morning I spent some time messing with this. It's quite effective.

I did discover that trying to be more clever about it doesn't work. Unlike, say, Rimworld, you can't build a maze. If the biters have a choice between digging through a wall and walking an extra 15 or so tiles to go around the wall, they'll dig through the wall. They do prefer an un-obstructed path, but only if it's still a fairly direct route to attack the flamethrowers.

You do need laser turret backups to deal with smaller, faster biters. Not many, but some, since the flamethrowers won't hit the lead wave of small biters.

Very clever exploit of how their thinking works too, the need to attack the offending item is always priority one. In other words whatever dealt the damage must be destroyed first. Then comes looking to see how they can get there, if walls block all paths they get attacked. But in this case they can just waltz right into range. And lets not forget that this setup FULLY exploits the fuel used, by hitting the outer range of the killzone, any and all bugs coming in will be affected by the fire. In other words the max output the fire can deliver will be delivered.

They simply funnel into an oven if you will, one that will give them no escape. And their own behemoth size actually works against them. In the end by the time the flamethrowers are done cleaning up those that got to close the ones in back will have atleast suffered a quart or more of their health lost. And in so doing the defense cascades into untannable by the enemy.

Its pretty damn clever gonna use this!

I tried this and sometimes they will decide to start attacking the little separated piece. If that gets damaged, then all of the spitters will decide to focus on it. I found that shortening the "tunnel" until the flame turret range is past the separated piece helped, but was not an absolute fix. Sometimes, they just decide to start shooting at the wall. Because of the shape, drones will get completely burnt to a crisp when they try to repair it.

It's still one of the better designs I've found, but it only sometimes manages to stand up to waves without taking damage.

This design was revolutionary for my wall defences. Apart from some tiny moderations I've made, I use this design exclusively now. Thanks a lot for this video. My changes were to remove the walls directly behind the flame turrets so as to encourage the pathing algorithm even more to choose the tunnel instead of through any walls. It is impossible to make them choose the tunnels 100% of the time unfortunately

I do something similar to this when i have build a bridge connection between two pieces of land. Make it wide enough for trains to pass, then put islands on either side with flame turrets on them just close enough that it can hit the opposite side of the bridge. Then use gates to create the zig-zag path for the biters to get caught up in. I've never seen biters cross it successfully. This becomes even easier if you use waterfill mod

That’s actually a good idea. It basically eliminates the need for repairs and who says that has to be the limit to how thicc is?

Oh wow. I experimented with open wall designs, or designs which put obstacles infront of the wall to trick the AI into no attacking the wall.
It never occured to me to put turrets on the "outside" to lure biters away from chewing on walls.

I am going to give this one a try. I usually just do a double wall with machine gus and lasers. I set up an entire factory and belt/train system for reloading. It works very well but this would be interesting.
