Rescuers Cause Stampede To Save Seal

The OCN team is causing a mass stampede among the seals at Cape Cross. They have no other choice if they want to get to the entangled individual to remove a loop of fishing line from its neck. It is impossible to get close enough without being detected. The moment the first seal notices the rescuer and starts running away, all others will follow, even if they have not seen the perceived predator themselves. Once Naude captures the entangled seal in the net, the other seals calm down, turn around, and watch what's happening. They cannot understand what an entanglement or a rescue is, but hopefully they realise that their friend was not harmed in the process. It is probably a good thing if they consider humans their enemy!

I always love it when there are seals nearby that sit and watch the rescues, seeing the rescued seal lumber off and the OCN team merely watching it leave, without pursuit. I know as a rule it's usually bad for wild animals to become acclimated to humans, but in this case I think it's helpful to a limited extent. In any case, another job well done, team!
