CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The ship's Captain (Leslie Nielsen) watches helplessly as a massive tidal wave crashes into the Poseideon, sending crew and passengers into total chaos.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Poseidon, an ocean liner larger than the Queens Elizabeth and Mary combined, is charting its course on New Year's Eve. Just after midnight, Captain Harrison (Leslie Nielsen) spots the mother of all tidal waves. It is the last thing that Harrison and practically everyone else onboard sees before drowning -- the Poseidon is turned upside down, with only a handful of survivors. The ten lucky ones -- including Mike Rogo (Ernest Borgnine), Linda Rogo (Stella Stevens), Acres (Roddy McDowall), Belle Rosen (Shelley Winters), and Manny Rosen (Jack Albertson) -- led by no-nonsense minister Frank Scott (Gene Hackman), desperately attempt to climb from the top of the ship (now submerged) to the bottom (now "the top"). The film's theme song, "The Morning After," sung by Maureen McGovern, earned an Oscar. In addition, The Poseidon Adventure received the Special Achievement Award for Special Effects; L.B. Abbott and A.D. Flowers were the recipients. A sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, came out in 1979.

there've been many great stunt falls since this one but for me, the guy falling into the light fixture remains one of the most iconic images ever filmed.

I remember my grandma saying when this came out in theaters and she went to see it, they had a giant upside down Christmas tree in the theater lobby as an advertisement for this.

This film packed the theaters in 1972-73, there just wasn't anything else like it. The stunts were some of the most daring ever done up to that time, and it has stood the test of time quite well.

Almost 50 years old, and still one of the most realistic and best scenes of disaster in any film. A few of the screaming extras are a little off, but overall, still as powerful as it was in 1972.

I remember my parents taking me to see this - all these years still INCREDIBLE. No CGI just fantastic stuntwork!

I can't believe all the negative comments on the quality of the film. It was made in 1972, way before cgi was created.

I was born in 1959 and loved everything about the 50s - 90s. The movies, music, television and life in general, that feeling is gone today in 2023 sadly.

The original POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972) still holds up and still has no equal.

This film was an incredible film for 1972. It was the Star Wars of the disaster genre, and a superior watch to any of its sequels or remakes.

Stella Stevens doesn't get enough credit for playing Linda Rogo. She had the best lines and her acting superb. ❤

This scene still looks great, even today. The effects and the sets were done with great precision. And the collection of talent in this movie included some of the finest actors of that era: Ernest Borgnine, Gene Hackman, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters, Roddy McDowall, and Leslie Neilsen!

Irwin Allen was the KING of the disaster films in the 1970's! This one, The Towering Inferno, and When Time Ran Out comes to mind!

Oh my god this scene still sends shivers up my spine today. There are two types of terror . One the initial fear that you might seriously hurt yourself or die from the roll . The second, if you do survive, contemplating whether it was best to die in the initial impact, because now will you suffer horifically, if theres no way out! Powerful cinema !

One of the most beautifully crafted disaster scenes.

To all of those who argue that the 2006 remake was superior, I have two words: Gene Hackman
