Shrimp is a type of shellfish that is widely consumed and also often referred to as prawn. In America, people eat more shrimp than any other seafood on average. Shrimps can also have several health benefits besides being delicious.

Health benefits of Shrimp

Shrimps are mostly protein and water. They are low in calories, so they are ideal if you are on a weight loss diet. Shrimp is also a good source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Shrimps are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, like selenium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron and manganese.

The antioxidants in shrimp can protect against the damage of free radicals and repair cells. There is an antioxidant in shrimp called astaxanthin that can lower bad cholesterol levels, slow down aging, and support radiant and healthy skin and hair. Salmon is also abundant in this antioxidant.

Shrimps are quite high in cholesterol, and some people claim that they are unhealthy because of this. However, research shows that shrimp actually doesn’t affect heart health negatively.

Shrimp is rich in selenium, which we can’t find in many foods. Selenium supports thyroid function and bone health. Some studies also show that selenium can prevent certain types of cancer.

Shrimp is one of the best sources of a mineral called iodine, which many people are deficient in. Iodine supports brain health and proper thyroid function.
