The 'a' is the only way you could frame this, because you know that it _might_ be the taxes imposed on the South by the North. It seems that currently America is obsessed with slavery and is retconing its history to meet present day expectations.
If you're going to talk about the emancipation of slaves and the abolition of slavery, I think it behoves you to mention England and its place in the history of freeing slaves and abolishing slaves. Whites where only a small minority when it came to the slave trade, but it seems white people bear all the current responsibility and blame for slavery.
I wonder who sold Dred Scott's father, or grandfather, into slavery, it sure wasn't whitey.
