After using both Mac Studio and MacBook Pro M2, I switched back to using the Mac Studio for one reason. I was finding midway through a 8-10hr day working in Unity, Xcode and Photoshop the MacBook Pro would increasingly get warmer and never cool down. Whereas the Mac Studio remained essentially ice cold and silent all day. I'll be sticking to the Mac Studio upgrade path (hopefully they continue the line).

If you work on larger projects in Lightroom, Photoshop, Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve then you’ll see significant performance increases with the M1 Ultra over the M2 Max.

ArtIsRight did a 1, 000 image export and the M1 Ultra was nearly twice as fast as the M2 Max. Same for a larger video project.

Max, please, add a PyTorch test to your benchmark stack. Apple Silicon macs became relatively efficient for some machine learning experiments, so it's interesting to see the performance.

I have a Mac Studio Max and an older MBP. I have noticed that for 99% of my time the older MBP does everything I need well enough, even the kind of games I play. So yeah, if you connect it to an Apple display (Thunderbolts are cheap now) you get a dual screen and good enough performance.

I bought M1 Max 16 laptop. After a few months I realised I made a mistake. I should’ve bought M1 max Studio instead. I already had all the peripherals and am not travelling much. This laptop including dongles cost me a lot of money. If I had bought M1 Max Studio I would save a ton, A TON of money. My 2 cents.

The (3nm) M3 Mac Studio will be a keeper. I just hope Apple releases it along with the M3 Mac Pro for those of us who do not need Mac Pro expandability.

I suspect what this is really showing is that they should be upgrading the Mac Studios at the same time as the MacBook Pros, so you wouldn't get weird cross-generational comparisons like this. I imagine the reason they didn't is that ol' chestnut, supply-chain issues.

Based on your excellent videos, I've just today ordered a MBP 16" M2 Max 38-core, 32GB Unified Memory and 2TB SSD to replace my mid 2015 15" MBP Retina which has lasted 8 years without fault and is still OK apart from a failing battery. I hope this new one will last just as long!

Great video. ProRes RAW is NOT tougher for the macs. Yes they have higher bitrates but that is because it's LESS copmressed which makes it EASIER on the cpu not harder. It even proves itself in your export times which are FASTER not slower than the export times for your 8bit footage.

I am a developer with M1 mac mini and I have been abusing it with multiple workspaces and projects running simultaneously and never ever had any issues till date. If you are developer, student or starting with content creation base mac mini is enough for those use cases.

I have a Mac Studio and a new Mac Book Pro. I tried to use the MBP only but it is irritating me that I have to pull all the connectors every time. Now I can leave the projects untouched and go to sets and meetings with the MBP.

And it is dangerous to only have one machine that can do your job, if one fails you are screwed!

I remember back when 3d rendered animated movies first came on the scene, the developers would brag about how long each frame took to render and how high end the hardware was. It would be interesting to find the details on those pioneering movies and the levels/cost of Hardware used, then compare it to how long the same movies would take and cost on these newer Macs.

Since at least the Intel switch I have mainly used MacBook Pros as main maschines. Right now I still own a Mac Mini Intel, but it only gets fired up when I need some older Adobe software. So yeah, your insights are very much appreciated. And I will consider a desktop Mac if one comes out, but for the last few years that potential to grab the whole setup and be as productive on the go as at home is worth €€€. My now mainly used 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro even does dual-27" display setup.

Would the M2 Max Studio have similar performance to this laptop? I'm debating between the M2 Ultra or the M2 Max studio, which I suspect is more than I need.
