In the early 2000s there was a mother orca that killed a great white on her own in Northern California in front of her calf. Most likely teaching her baby.

Orcas are actually dolphins too. The largest of the species. I heard the name killer whale actually derived from whale killers. I have looked it up & pages say it's true others say they were misidentified due to their size & the fact they look nothing like bottle nose dolphins. If someone knows the true reason, I'm all ears.

There's a great video about an Orca killing a great white in the 90s in the waters off of Hawaii. Happened right by a tour boat. We(humans, I wasnt involved) discovered an enzyme in shark livers that warns others out of the area. It messed up the sharks' normal migratory patterns for the next year. They did some tests with the enzyme as a shark repellent and it worked like a charm.

That video is what got me into Orcas. The information about how they teach their young and the tactics they use flipping sharks and stingrays upside down is pretty amazing.

On the downside, they definitely seems a little psychopathic. They're not always hunting to eat. They do it for fun as well. They'll toy with their prey. Truly amazing beings.

Notes: Been awhile since i saw the video. May not have been Hawaii and may not have been an enzyme but something in the liver works the way I described.

Never knew Orcas used to help Whalers. Truly the dark side of Human/Animal cooperation.
