I've seen empty boxes go for like 400 bucks, no lie on eBay. He's still sitting on a gold mine there, lol. But for real, no foolsies an empty good condition box of base set does go for like hundreds of dollars.

Honestly, if they were actually filled you know the smart thing would be to piecemail. Sell them if you wanted the most money, but if you care about the game you should just crash the market with them. Pokemon has gotten just ridiculous, I mean seriously, people ask tons of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a box of cards

Or it's possible he bought a LOT of unlimited empty booster boxes from eBay in the 2010 era for around $20 a pop...
If they were his old boxes.... Why no shadowless or 1st edition boxes? He has 10 supposedly opened 1st ed charizards, so that would mean at least 10 1st ed boxes. But none seen here. I think he threw out all his old original boxes
