I got asked what my best advice for achieving success on the internet was, here's my answer.

Do you need talent to be successful? How does enthusiasm play a role in online success? How can you separate yourself out from your competition? What are the biggest competitive advantages that are available to everyone? How can you build a following online simply by not stopping?

I spent the majority of my career as a working frontline foreman. Always when the end of the job neared and layoffs begun, who I chose to stay to the end, were the people that I had been able to count on to be there even when there was bad weather, or a particularly bad part of the job, or redoing someone's mistake. I didn't care about about personality, or intelligence, or talent. Consistency is what I rewarded.

Great video! Consistency is key even outside the realm of internet based work. Showing up ready to work, even on the days you'd rather be anywhere else, is what separates the successful from the complainers.

Choosing a job wisely helps a lot too, not much need for coopers or carters these days.

Slowly getting my bands name out there and making a name for myself by consistently releasing good music - been doing it 6 years now and still going strong. Consistency is key (as well as talent and enthusiasm of course). Water shapes the world, not because it falls all at once but because it falls consistently.

Exactly. Just show up and do the work, even when you don't feel like it. It's the same with working out, the same with learning languages, the same with everything.

I certainly find this as a software developer.
Perhaps one of the most important things I have had to cultivate is the ability to manage my frustration and not to give up, or rather to take a rest and come back, look at the issue from another angle and solve the problem.
Then I try to remember that I have solved a lot of problems in the past.

Consistency is only one pillar of success. If your competitors are more competent, more assertive or just better capitalised, consistency alone is futile. The trick is to recognise when consistency will be rewarded in a way which makes the whole project sustainable over decades. Kudos and attention aren't enough to see you past the first couple of years.

We also have to recognise that working other jobs to cross-subsidise our personal project prevents us from spending the time to achieve mastery of that project, and can sometimes just delay failure, that learning experience which would prompt pivoting to better options.
