Consider it more softshell than fleece, and the R1 Techface will layer wonderfully over a base layer or standard R1. Throw a hardshell over the R1 Techface and it has a good amount of thermal insulating properties as well. Overall, it's easily the most versatile fleece hoody on the market. Love the fit as well.

The R1 techface is shipped with more DWR than my shell jackets which can be good and the intention is clear.
It's ( overall ) designed as a third layer and I wouldn't call it a "skin piece".
The body is wide and intended to fit 2 layers underneath which makes the arms ( and sometimes ) the cuffs too tight.
However. The lower arms are easily modded and I plan to add 2 cm in circumference from the elbow to the cuff
because I won't use the R1 as a solo garment. ( this will also make it possible to use insulators under the R 1 ) I added 3 cm to my Atom LT. Stretch is not inherently bad but the material shouldn't be stretched around the arms on a permanent basis. Stretch is better for movements that are seldom done and even then it's better with improved cuts from the start. On a side note. Nobody has ever frozen because of escaped heat from cuffs but people have lost fingers because of tight garments after losing ( or not having ) their mittens. It's not bad to have a small channel of heat escape towards the fingers even in climbing gear. The slimming has gone too far. I find myself using regular "Walmart brands" even for serious environments because of a bad fit across all technical outdoor gear and the "tech gear" to be used in town because of the cooler look. Quite a funny reverse.
