I really like Shinkai's movies that dont have a happy ending. This movie and 5cm per second. They dont end up together, they dont have a happy ending, the characters in each movie know it wont work out for them and have to move on and grow without each other anymore. It's realistic, the real world doesnt always have happy endings and people have to learn to cope with things not working out

Some time ago I watched a video about the OST composer.

Personally my favorite movies from Shinkai are 5CM Per Second and Garden of Words.
Your Name is very good but it lost a lot of the arthouse experimental feel of his past works. Also, I prefer grounded stories and bittersweet endings better. I think supernatural elements are not his strongest field yet.

Weathering With You was kinda a let down for me, it doesn't have an unique personality like the rest of his filmography, is more like a safe derivate of Your Name. And it has clever ideas but the execution is average. I hope his next film to be very different.
