The Kiwi Ears Canta microplanars definitely sound shrill...especially with rock music. I had to re-tune mine in order to listen to them without irritation. I opened the nozzle, inserted a 5x5 mm mid-density foam in the nozzle, re-seated the original filter and nozzle screen, and put another 5mm 500 grade filter on top of the nozzle. Took a bunch of experimenting, but finally got it right.

And as usual, very excellent and detailed long-form review.
By the way Tony, I came across the BGVP Feather, and it seems there has been only one review, so far. Said that the Feather is an improved EA500-LM, though that's comparing a multi-driver hybrid vs a single driver. But it could also be possible that it's another one of those IEMs that are getting slept on because people's attention are on the other more familiar brands.
Mind looking into it?

The ESS sounds good on "thin" sounding iems and also on very warm sounding iems.

As a neutral slightly warm IEM would you suggest EPZ P50, Sonata or something else? The Sonata might graph a bit closer to my preference with the toned down presence region and mid bass emphasis, but do you feel the EPZ P50 is a better overall package?

Mids go forward when you increase volume on P50 - it becomes too midcentric. Open back nature smooths the highs, P50 have not shown any resonance (present in other earphones) on busy tracks thanks to that.

I really like my QoA Mimosa, especially for the price.
What would you recommend as an upgrade to the QoA Mimosa with similar sound signature/tuning, but with a bite more forward vocals (up to 500 USD)?

The Quintet is only well-tuned if you like extreme fatigue. A very brilliant IEM, I have never met anyone who liked it. I regret buying it.
