The UK takeaway industry is booming. The country now spends over £10 billion a year on takeaway food, with the online market being dominated by giants like JustEat and Deliveroo. But what is the real cost of convenience?

Panorama investigates how planning laws are being subverted and food safety legislation flouted in the battle to sell whatever consumers want to eat, whenever and wherever they want to eat it. Reporter Tina Daheley lifts the lid on the secrets of the takeaway industry.

Why are 0 rated restaurants/take-always still open?!!! They should be shut down immediately! That makes me so angry 😡

Cook, it's cheaper and you know what you're eating.

Beats me as to why any local authority bothers with a food hygiene rating when they can't instantly shut down a zero rating food outlet!

I'm not being funny, but if you have a serious allergy then IMO, you should NOT be ordering takeaways and only eating out at very carefully selected and trusted places. You are dicing with death, and although the establishments can be punished, it's too late when you're dead. I find it bizarre people don't understand this. Mind blowing.

How the hell can a Restaurant with 0 rating even be allowed to stay open?. I blame the Authorities for this mess and danger to the General public and the Girls death. Cannot believe this is happening in Europe, seems more like a Third World Country.

Just eat is a delivery service. Sure they could do more and probably should. However the council had allowed a 0 star hygeine rated place to continue trading. As a chef I can say that to get 0 stars you should be closed until standards are improved. Just eat probably should do more however they aren't trading with businesses that are trading legally.

So at what point does personal responsibility come into play? All I see is people complaining about things that they can avoid.

To be fair, if you had a nut allergy then you don't order from Indian restaurants, because just like Tia, Chinese, Japanese, Middle eastern... they use a LOT of nuts in their cooking.

And food prepared in a kitchen where nuts are prepared will never be 100% safe, because there are extractors and fans blowing it into every single area. I find it more sad that her parents didn't explain why she shouldn't really eat in these restaurants let alone a take away, where it's on a lot faster pace and more risk of cross contamination. Worked much of my adult life in restaurants, this isn't an excuse.. just facts!!

If you see dishes on the menu that have nuts, especially if more than one, then you best steer clear of that restaurant or take away if you have a nut allergy. Unless the restaurant has nut allergy free zone, some higher market restaurants will have a special prep/cooking area (a sealed room) especially for nut allergy's.

And also you need to check whether they use peanut oil in their cooking, as Asian restaurants will also be likely using traditional seasoned woks.. and this will mean the oil is likely to be in the pan in small amounts...

I am as saddened by this as anyone, BUT we have to stop being a nation that needs to be led by the hand and become a nation of using common sense and look out for ourselves. If you don't know someone why would you trust them with your life? STOP expecting total strangers to be the ones looking out for you, you're playing Russian roulette!!! !

I just order directly with the takeaways. Just Eat apparently charge up to 20% to an establishment just for an order which means these small takeaways are slowly being run into the ground as their profit margins are so low anyway. It’s just leads to taking away incomes for everyone within an takeaway eventually and most importantly our community and British tax. Nothing wrong with ordering the old fashioned way through a phone and speaking to someone, we have our phones with us constantly so what’s stopping us

I know there's no excuse but for people with allergies (like myself) it's a given that I can't order takeout.

I’ve gained so much of weight since the advent of these food delivery apps. Became pre diabetic too. This past year, I switched back to cooking for myself and I’ve lost almost 10kg and have a glucose score under 5. *pats self on back* Resist the temptation of convenience ✊

Wheat free chicken chow mein. That had to be a joke. And they really had to send it off to be tested? The basic level of ignorance and lack of care in the guy taking the order is why if I had a food allergy that could kill me I would never order a takeaway, and why it's something I rarely do anyway.

I don't eat takeaways. I can cook them myself. It takes less time to cook your own takeaway meal than it does to order one... wait for it, and get it. And; it's cheaper.

95% o the food I have ever had from home delivery was over-priced and shit. I have simply stopped ordering it. I eat out, or I cook at home. I can make a pizza from scratch in an hour - including dough, I can make a sweet and sour pork with stir-fried vege. in 25 minutes. A tenth of the cost.

My family hardly ever get deliveries .... and if we do it’s like once in 3/4 months. It’s usually like a treat night where we get Pizza from Pizza Hut. It’s crazy how dependent some people can be on deliveroo 😭 and it’s scary where your food could be from if you don’t order from the actual restaurant
