Kahlen would go to a cafe every night. He saw a cashier girl look at a disabled guy trying to eat but failing so she went over there and helped him by feeding him with a spoon. Kahlen noticed that every time the man came to the cafe she helped him eat. Her kindness stuck her out from hundreds of people Kahlen met every day. Kahlen would order a smoked chicken salami sandwich with extra fries and when he did, she would ask, "Anything else?" and Kahlen would reply that that's it and thank her, and he always felt, at that moment, his heart dry up as if it's dying of thirst. And when he'd go to a table to eat, all he could think about was how nice it was to hear her voice even if it was just for a few seconds. That is what he would look forward to when he woke up each day. He wondered if he should ask her name and ask her out. He still felt unsure. He always felt that most people were more attractive than him and felt that even if she were to become his partner then it would be unfair for her. Then he ended the night on his roof with cigarettes under the moon.

Kahlen still wanted to ask her out and next night at the cafe, something strange happened. Kahlen had been in fights, growing up, he had faced older boys with hardened fists on tough streets. He had won a lot of fights and lost a lot of fights. He became unafraid of such situations yet in front of his girl who was shorter than him, who could not lift him up for the sake of her life, Kahlen felt fear like he had never felt before. Just meeting her eyes felt like he was waging war against the gods like an usurper destined to fall.

He ordered the usual sandwich and when she asked, "Anything else?"

For the first time he replied, "Well.... Yes."

A thought sparked violently. A thought of sabotage. 'Fuck, abort mission. Pull out. Abort the fucking mission, ' it said.

Kahlen trudged on. He knew that there was a high chance that she would reject him and it would make all the next visits awkward and he would maybe even have to quit coming to the cafe and will not be able to see her anymore. Maybe the battle was already lost. But he decided that he'd rather lose fighting the battle and not quit without facing the fire. So he continued, "This is gonna sound very strange and I apologize from the bottom of my heart for doing this to you while you are working but I need to tell you this. I always feel like I am a mad commander of a burning fleet. Like I'm always on stormy seas. But the moments where you speak, when I hear your voice, the sea calms down. And I feel peaceful. Almost safe. And I- I wanna keep hearing you speak all the time and.... I'd really really like to take you out to dinner. You think that'd be possible?"
