QUENTIN Tarantino has hit back at a journalist who dared to question why Margot Robbie had so few lines in his latest film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

The controversial director has received rave reviews for the movie, which has been dubbed a ‘love letter' to the last moments of Hollywood's golden age.

Speaking at press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, a journalist from The New York Times asked why Margot Robbie - who plays Sharon Tate - wasn't given many lines.

Quentin, 56, shot back bluntly: “I just reject your hypotheses.”

Margot jumped in to defend the director, noting she felt the moments she had on screen honoured the “lightness” she had always heard Tate embodied.

The 28-year-old said: “I got a lot of time to explore the character even without speaking.

From Brexit breaking news to HD movie trailers, The Sun newspaper brings you the latest news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world.

“I think the moments I was on screen gave a moment to honour Sharon. I think the tragedy was the loss of innocence.

“To show the wonderful sides of her could be done without speaking.

“Rarely do I get to spend so much time on my own as a character. That was actually an interesting thing for me to do as an actor.”

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is set in 1969 Los Angeles and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as television star Rick Dalton, Brad Pitt as his long-time stunt double and Margot as movie star Sharon Tate.

Quentin’s attitude to women in his films has come under scrutiny before after Uma Thurman alleged he pushed her to perform a “Kill Bill” stunt that left her permanently injured.
The legendary director also cast Emile Hirsch in his ninth film, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a female executive in 2015.

Tarantino was making strong female characters before it was cool and trendy

Simple answer: Tarantino wanted to write the movie he wanted to write, not the movie this Feminist journalist wanted written. It was the perfect answer to the stupidest question imaginable, except I would have added a few swear words in my response for emphasis.

Charlie Chaplin didn't get many lines either. Is it because he was English?

Jonah Hill is at least as talented as Margot Robbie and he only had one scene in Django, Christopher Walken only had one scene in Pulp Fiction, etc.

"Well, I just reject your hypothesis" 😂 The stuff of legend. Now I look forward to watching this film.

What an idiotic "question". Even worse as she clearly has no idea of Tarantino's work. The guy she's questioning has made multiple movies with ultra-strong female leads and characters.

I thought he interpreted the question as being disrespectful to Margot as an actress so he immediately shut it down. Also when Sharon Tate was mentioned the response was an abrupt no. In other words every scene, every line was exactly as he intended and hence his curt responses.

Tarantino's reaction is enough to let me know that this film will be good and not just another once of these terrible PC films Hollywood is always doing these days

Seems like the journalist (also) wants to shame Margot Robbie for accepting the role. Might have been unintentional though, kind of collateral damage.

Hardly ‘hit back’ did he, replied professionally and respectfully to a ridiculous question. Wouldn’t expect much more from the New York Times or The Sun respectively I guess lol

A question asked by someone who either never saw the film, or clearly doesn't get the point of why Margot's character was in the film in the first place.

There are no small actors only small parts as they say

If I was Quentin answering this question, I would have been a little more elaborate. I would have said “because Margot Robbie’s character fit the film well in what I wanted to make.”

The journalists next question, "Was there any discrepancies in pay, because of the gender wage gap?" 😂
