This was the first video I've seen about my generation (Gen X) that wasn't self-congratulatory nonsense. Well done.

Gen X established the parameters of the internet we all live in today. That hits hard.

Personally, I *do* want people to betray their core values, if their core values happen to be awful. They should get better ones instead.

If I could go back and give a message to myself as a child, I would tell him that you are NOT perfect just as you are. Don't listen to your mom, kid. You need to work on making yourself intelligent, interesting, funny, and useful. And take an interest in others around you instead of being so self-absorbed.

From my last couple years experience working with young people, I have to say, this back half of Gen Z is some twisted mf's in the best way. They dont expect anyone to give a single crap about them. They are all little old people. After having spent their teens the way they did, with the veil of society and order peeled back like it has been, they are aged beyond their years. Good people.

Hoi polloi, this hits me hard in my altered state.

I was in the atheism-to-fascism pipeline circa 2014, and I soon came to understand that my behavior was giving my friends anxiety. So I undertook the journey of changing my views. I'm a leftist now, and while I'm still an atheist, I recognize that religion isn't all bad.

But when I tried to ask them to address behaviors that were causing me anxiety, that was too much for them to handle. I'm lonelier than I ever been because I asked them to show me the respect I had shown them in changing.

Why have any core values unless they help you make the world a better place?

Being uncomfortable is trauma, but we are trauma based creatures. Lifting weights? Trauma to the muscles. Stepping outside your comfort zone? It's still a type of trauma. But we need that trauma. It's what makes us stronger. My favorite quote about this subject from a bud was, "they haven't spent a lot time outside their comfort zone and it shows".

the fact that shame, frustration, etc are all normal doesn't make it ok. it's just more everpresent proof that life is a curse.

I don't owe anyone a smile or small talk session, I don't have to avoid negative feelings for the preferences of timid, vacuous and shallow people who demand proper behavior and for everything to be positive and sunshiny and cater to their denials. It doesn't go well and it's a lose/lose. If I obey social demands (from entitled, often predatory people who don't understand personal space and boundaries), I'm some kind of sucker. I'm a human, not a resource to feed off of. I'm a loner and I'm not sure I'm the asshole you're describing here.

Without Gen X, we wouldn't know the Angry chair is code for when you can't poop when you're full of heroin. I think about this a lot.
