The Quiksilver Pro New York | The (Re)Birth of the Dream Tour

How one WCT event helped shape modern pro surfing – in more ways than one.

On September 8th and 9th, 2011, the Quiksilver Pro New York surprised the surf world by scoring epic surf in Long Beach. One non-local wasn't surprised: Surfline's Sean Collins. He had been commissioned by Quiksilver the previous year to research the viability of good surf here. And after sorting through 15 years of swell history, bathymetry charts and models, Collins said "yes" and "here's the best dates." And he was right.

I surfed that swell up in Rhode Island. Had several days of really good swell. I thought of going down to watch the contest, but I couldn't tear myself away from surfing to go watch.

Surfed Long Beach A LOT in mid-late 60's, saw some hurricane waves, the occasional summer swell and the super fog glass day. But we were on 9'6" boards with unlined wetsuits for part then smaller boards.
Our first few surfs were at Gilgo with rented boards. Finally bought boards and heard about Long Beach. Four of us in my 32hp Renault Dauphine and 4 - 9'6" boards went to Long Beach, on a Sunday, only people out. Surfed, back to car and racks gone. Surf shop closed. We pooled our money and found the oldest looking pair on a car, took them, left the money.

So insane that anybody thought this was a good idea and even crazier they actually scored lol. Could use some of that right now, its been a rough start to hurricane season.

“To find that perfect period?!?”
What an ignorant comment. Seriously.

Contempt prior to investigation is the height of ignorance.

1.)You’ve never surfed here or you surfed here once
2.) You know little to nothing about the surf on the East Coast of these United States, but hey, we are going to comment on what the typical surf conditions are like in that area🤔

East Coast United States gets plenty of surf.
In many ways we have just as good surf as California. We don’t have surf every single day like California and we don’t have the variety of different types of waves (mostly beach break here) but it does seem that we tend to get more head high to overhead swells than California is getting annually.
So when you want to talk about consistency from East Coast to West Coast, the East Coast has more consistent head high overhead surf than West Coast of the U.S.A. where the west has very consistent small surf up to 4 or5 foot.

Looks like a lot of sloppy close outs. Nothing to write home about. It's nice there was something to ride, but these waves were messy even for Long Island, Sandbars change constantly and so do the waves. I'll bet Gilgo broke better that day. I admit the barrels were cool even if they only lasted two seconds.
