This is one reason why I am now shying away from relationships. It takes too much work. Not both parties are willing to do what your suggesting. Only two grown adults will carry out this advice

I believe that my primary issue when it comes to communication is that I always see the negative of something that is said. For example, we recently went to visit my wife’s family. One of the many times we were spending time with her mother, her mom said “I bet you both can’t wait to go back home and get back to reality” to which my wife’s reply was “Not at all. I don’t like reality”

My immediate thought was “did she just imply that she doesn’t like being with me? Or being at home with me? Does she hate where we live? Is she unhappy?”

^ I said nothing and had to sit there an rationalize what she said. That being said, my immediate reaction was still solely focused on the negative. Because that’s what was said, and to me, an implication was attached.

What about if you don't know your words are hurt and the other party failed to disclose that they're hurts ?
