@amustycow I have a theory in mind, what if the speed at which you go from no R2 input to full input actually matters in the speed you get and that's why the speed feels a bit random. So, why don't you try doing the slow shots with a keyboard instead so that there is no time between the stages of input of the keys on it.
You can also just bind acceleration to R1 instead as it's either 0% or 100% active.

Just like that other guy I too have a theory:
I assume the ball will bounce high and farther the faster you just drive into it, so maybe at the very low kphs it affects the speed because it could be losing more momentum when it bounces. So when you were going for the 17, maybe being only a few inches farther back made it bounce slightly higher and lose more momentum. And then when you got closer, it could have lost less momentum from a slightly shorter bounce and maybe it even had less bounces. So when you hit it from different distances it may have scored the same, but the original velocity and speed must have been different. Perhaps try this theory by jumping before you hit the ball and hitting it in the center where it won’t bounce.

pro tip musty, im pretty sure if u match ur car at supersonic to the ball u go 82kph. That’s the max speed of ur car at supersonic

I think the reason you’re getting 16s and 17s is because just driving with no boost is around there so maybe try to hit the ball before you go full driving speed, hope this helps😊

The car matters ALOT. There’s thing called a lever, which helps ALOT with speed, so I recommend using the breakout or F1.

The force you're applying isn't linear if you're not at terminal velocity (without boost) so that technique isn't very reliable at slower speeds...i think
