Ansible for Networking: Configuration Backup and Restore

One of the quickest wins you can achieve with Ansible for Network Automation is creating a reliable backup process. Since all certified collections from our networking partners adhere to a common data model, these backups are vendor-agnostic. As a result, you can compare backups across a fleet of devices that don't all adhere perfectly to a corporate standard (which is usually the reality). Building out a backup and restore process will also set you up for a NetOps workflow which requires a bit more confidence in the automation, but I will cover that in a future post. For now, let's take a look at how to setup a backup and restore process using git and ansible.
