There's honestly something really sweet about this
Batman finally concedes, and lets Joker win. By killing him, he proves that even he can be pushed to the point of breaking his moral code.
What puts him over the edge? The final threat to his best friend's happiness.
It's a powerful self-sacrifice of sorts

Imagine this:
Inmates learn that Bruce is Batman. Angered, they try to take him out. Then, physically, Bruce reminds them that he's Batman.

Next, criminals outside the jail try to commit more crimes, because Batman is in jail. But they are stopped by any of Batman's friends or students. And they are sent to jail to... Batman.
