The Incredible Ichthyosaurus - Guest lecture by Dean Lomax

This is a recording of a lecture I gave to the Geologists' Association on June 2, 2017, about my ongoing research on Ichthyosaurus.

The talk is in no way exhaustive, but I discuss some of my more interesting research papers, including the description of Ichthyosaurus anningae (yup, named after Mary Anning), some other specimens collected by Mary, provide a brief intro to ichthyosaurs and more.

Excellent, I have often wondered how and why these things are distinguished. A fascinating look into how paleontology works. It doesn't hurt that an Ichthyosaur is the state fossil of my home state of Nevada.

"Were going to be resurrecting another genus of Ichthyosaurus"....😳 I had to rewind that and pay attention to context, my imagination got a bit too excited and was going all Jurassic Park 😄

thank for sharing. I am hoping to find some information about tale bones and the swimming method, base on the tale, and the change of the tale's bone position from bottom half of tale to top half the tale (from fossils to now days species);
can you direct me to some paper, or even give me some key words for search ?

I call them hipster dolphins. They filled the same niche dolphins do today but did so before it was cool ;)

Progression through curiosity, no one needs merit nore titles to do research.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cause of their extinction, was caused by their version of a bothersome bipedal, land lubber, that killed absolutely everything.
If they were still around, we'd be the reason for them dying out in a short time.
Our species has a talent for finding a way to eat everything.

Wait- so this one doesn't seem to be about the life-and-habits of icthyosaurs as much as about the process of fossil research?

How on earth can you continue calling them 'reptiles', when they clearly were not!
