Afghan Women’s Summit – an act of defiance in itself

After three years of being banned from secondary school, university, most jobs and public places, many women and girls in Afghanistan have lost all hope. Some have taken their own lives.

Now, more than 100 Afghan women have gathered at a summit in Albania, seeking greater pressure on the Taliban to reverse their oppressive laws, including a new one which bans women from speaking in public.

Just as Western nations emphasize preserving their cultural identity, Afghans also seek to safeguard their own culture and way of life within their country.
