You Don't Need to Burp Your Baby! Here's Why

Parents spend a lot of time and energy trying to burp their baby during and after every feed. And they spend even more time researching how to burp a newborn and what are the best positions to burp a newborn.

Most parents burp their baby because they've seen their parents do it, or they've been told that burping a baby is the best way to relieve gas in infants. This is because there's a long standing belief that when a baby nurses, air becomes trapped in their stomach. And if you don't help the baby 'burp' this excess air out then they are going to be fussy, in pain and more likely to spit up.

But do you actually need to burp your baby? Does it provide any benefit?

After watching this video you will know the answer to this question and you might decide burping is not for you!

Wow! This just made so much sense, it confirmed yet again to go with my gut instinct and my baby’s feedback. I thought I was not burping my baby enough even though it felt like it was unnecessary and waking him up and making him throw up more. Thank you for this video! I am so glad I came across your channel, so much useful information. I instinctively stopped burping him during the night a while ago and he sleeps better.

I tried burping when baby was a newborn. She'd never burp no matter how long I tried to get one out. Later she would scream and we'd have to do bicycle kicks to get the gas out. We found out it was dairy giving her gas and stomach cramps. In case anyone else is going through this, might be worth a shot to cut out dairy for a couple weeks and see if there's improvement.

Greetings dear Emma. I'm a seventy two year old granny from Cape Town, South Africa and love your informative videos. My four kids are married and my nine grandchildren are grown-up. So I love re-learning and you are an awesome coach. Much appreciated. Smiles from South Africa. Thanks. ⭐💝

I married an experienced father. He was adamant on burping our baby. My mom too. The believe is that the un-burped baby would choke when laid down, vomit or trapped gas (gassy baby).

Now, I am confused. My baby of 4 months old wakes up screaming if he isn't burped properly. At least, I think that is the reason because he burps almost immediately when I pick him up and will stop crying after the burp.

I'm not certain that 71 in one location performed once is sound data, but I wouldn't be surprised if burping turned out to be pointless

OMG my baby is sooo difficult to burp and I just got lazy and didn't burp him, didn't suffer any consequences. Sometimes he will be fussy while feeding and this is when I know he actually needs to burp but otherwise I don't.

My son don't really need burping unless necessary, if he fall asleep I don't bother of burping then he will pass gas from bottom so loudly

I never burp a sleepy baby but if my baby starts fussing during a feed I'll gently burp him until he gets the relief. Sometimes that's just sitting him up right and a cuddle or gentle rubs on his back.

Hi Emma,
Will the baby feed properly even if he doesn’t burp ? As I have been told they won’t take full feed as wind make them feel fuller . Further wind will cause them to become gassy if it goes to large intestine . It would be really helpful if you can answer my query. I’m spending 30-40 mins every night after every feed to make my baby burp it’s very exhausting.

How wrong I was all these days!!! Yeah, we tend to wake up the baby to burp her after feed. Thanks Emma for throwing light on this topic.

Thanks for affirming this! After much research and just in practice I discovered that they burp on their own sitting up position and even lying down. Trying to convince my husband otherwise is another story.

Whenever I burped my baby she would spit up. So I just stopped. It didn't make her any less fussy, and she kept her milk down more often. This video reassures me that I made the right choice.

This video is so helpful! It makes perfect sense to just watch and see if my baby actually needs to be burped rather than forcing it. I'm due in two weeks and I've been anxious about getting everything right, but I think this will help my perspective on other things also.

honestly i gave up on burping when it just resulted in more spit up + i had to constantly wake my baby, i just felt guilty about it but i felt like she did better w.o me forcing it… well guilt absolved! thank you for this 😂

I needed this video 7 months ago 😂 My first children were easy when it came to feeding. Had healthy appetites, burped easily and didn't spit up much. My last one was a nightmare because it was ingrained in me to always burp babies. My youngest wouldn't no matter how much I tried. She would always burp when she wanted/needed (which was hardly ever) despite all of the patting and maneuvering. She was more fussy and spit up more which made me panic. Her pediatrician eased my worries some but I was relieved to get to the point where she was more mobile and I thought I didn't have to burp her. Very helpful and informative video!

I'm an Aussie in Sweden and had a baby over here. The midwives etc tell people not to burp babies except under very specific circumstances. I have had the complete opposite experience to my sister in Australia who was told to always burp, and even to wake her baby from sleep to burp him.

This information is not for all babies. I didn't burp my baby for the first two weeks, but changed positions. When my LO was two weeks, I rushed him to the hospital because he was having a hard time breathing. Nose flare, chest retraction, and projectile vomiting. Turns out it was because of trapped gas and needing to slow down feedings.

One study is not enough to change how you care for your baby.

I felt so much less stress once I stopped trying to get him to burp. He does it so well on his own.

Interesting when my babies were in the special care nursery they insisted babies always be burped, even during the feed several times and would not put the baby down until they were burped
