Space Janitors is a sci-fi comedy series about a group of twenty-somethings working dead-end jobs aboard a gigantic evil space station. Like “Community” in space, this pack of misfits are thrust together to learn to live, love, work, and play amidst an epic space opera that’s just outside their window, but far above their pay grade. Centered on the low-stakes problems of heroes living in a very high stakes world, our custodian hero Darby Richards and his pals spend a lot more time cleaning up their personal lives than they do cleaning up after the Empire’s struggle for galactic dominance (you try getting rebel residue out of an air duct - it’s gross). Even so, they still occasionally manage to find themselves thrown into the middle of it anyway; like when Darby accidentally impersonates his Emperor boss... for which the penalty is death. Most of the penalties are death in a society that values order and power above all else, it even says so in the Janitor’s manual. Darby Richards is a low-level custodian, tired of being stuck on the bottom rung of the corporate ladder. If an officer would just give him a chance to prove himself, he thinks he could run this space station and finally put an end to that pesky rebellion! Despite all his big talk, Darby never actually does achieve anything to advance his career. Meanwhile, his schlubby roommate Mike Chet is just happy to keep his head down and earn his eighty credits per day cleaning up the space station. As far as Mike’s concerned, he’s already exceeded anyone’s expectations. Why rock the boat and get “noticed”? Later on, Darby discovers his father is a rebel Admiral. He is confused and conflicted. He’d always assumed one day he’d be more than a janitor, but being the long-lost son of a famous rebel wasn’t what he had in mind! It’s a dark secret he has to hide from his friend while coming to terms with his own loyalties.
