I use sprint for reverse engineering because of the image tracing feature the same as you do. To be truthful I was not aware of how primitive sprint was until I began to use it. The lack of a netlist file is a real problem, as you point out, because of that it cannot do a proper DRC. Your tips are really good as they were learned by experiencing problems and they saved me much pain. I intend to do the absolute minimum in sprint, just the component positions an the tracks/pads and move over to another CAD system to get the rest done. I'm looking at KICAD and there is some talk that it can also made to load an image.
