People really need to get over their terrible concern over being embarrassed or causing a scene and ACT immediately when something like this is happening. If you don't know what to do (shame on you for one) but QUICKLY FIND someone who knows what to do. Time is critical in these situations. Sad that 90% of people sitting around have no clue what to do or that anything is even happening in the first place. Everyone should be trained better from a young age in recognizing and reacting to situations like these.

Even if I didn't know how to do the heimlich, I would have at least shouted across the room asking if anyone knew how or would have called for help. I can't believe these people continued to eat like it was a show. The bystander effect is real.

When i was about 8-9 my little sister and i were doing gymnastics in my room and unbeknownst to me she was chewing gum. She did a cartwheel then suddenly stopped and looked at me with this terrified look on her face then grabbed at her throat. I panicked and asked her if she was choking and when she nodded her head yes i started screaming for my mom and patting her back as hard as i could. But my mom had friends over and couldn’t hear my screams over the music. I luckily the week prior had been watching a movie with my mom where they did the Heimlich maneuver in a short scene and thank God I remembered it! She ended up throwing up the gum on my foot. My mom didn’t believe me at first because my little sister was so traumatized she refused to speak.
