There's been a major breakthrough in federal funding for a critical infrastructure project in Queensland.

Reports have emerged that the Sunshine Coast railway project, which is critical to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, has been given the green light after locking in federal funding.

There was speculation that the railway extension was on the chopping block after the Albanese government retracted funding for infrastructure projects as costs spiraled out of control.

The railway extension was given the go ahead after Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles led a convoy to Canberra to lobby the Infrastructure Minister Catherine King.

Despite the breakthrough, it is still unclear how much the project will cost and what the funding split will be between the state and federal government.
