Read tonight that McConnell's main reason for allowing the debt ceiling vote is because so many people in Virginia depend on the government for their incomes. He was afraid of the impact that a bunch of people becoming unemployed due to the shutdown would have on the republican candidate in the Governor's election in November. Hence the December extension.
