i never knew a polarized screen could make you see the stress peaks

I have never had this question but I´m glad I now have an answer

Love this videos. The technical explanations in a German accent is the icing on the cake.

Did you ever wonder why german people speeking english still sounds like they’re speaking german

Glass specialist here. Perfect little explanation of this Phenomenon.

There is a very interesting basis to all of this, and it starts with pressure. While cutting Glass with sharp tools like the glass cutter or glass knifes, the very edge of the metal or of the diamond used, is putting an enormous pressure on the surface of the glass. This pressure is so high, that it will fracture the glass directly beneath it due to compressive stress. This also generates heat, which dissipates pretty fast, thus generating permanent stresses in the glass. The more pressure you add and the less friction you have on your cut, will result in either a „warm“ or a „cold“ cut. The cold cut will fracture more parts out of the cut, the warm cut will stay more evenly and not break out. Yet, if you look at the warm cut, you will even see the marks of the knife *literally melting the surface of the glass*, which is visible under an electron microscope. These cuts look like you have small hairs going from the higher parts of the cut. This is also happening underneath ice skaters, you add so much pressure, that the frozen water direct underneath the skater will melt, making a smooth ride.

Nevertheless, the glass heats and cools pretty fast, generating stresses, which are directly correlated to its ability to withstand tensions. The diamond sawed part does not have these stess points, as the diamond grinds off the small particles with less force and less heat. Adding the sharp edge made by the glass cutter to the equation, makes the glass break at this exact point made by the knife.

The visualizing of internal stress is something I want to learn more about and didn't even consider a possibility. It looks like magic. Out of the many hours I've wasted scrolling here, this is something that was actually worth my time and I find it really cool.

Forget how glass breaks. I am more fascinated by the polariscope

For all like me to simplify, more stress =break

You can't tell me this video isn't narrated by OhnePixel

A great science teacher can make you interested in something you'd never normally be interested in. Great work.

And THIS is one of MANY reasons why I love physics! What a beautiful demonstration!

The ‘tinks’ the glass makes when the molten glass is placed on it is such a satisfying sound

“It’s not the weakening … through removal, but the concentration of stress” that leads to breaking. Others have said it here, but please hear because the analogy is useful:

Losing or weakening is. It when you break, but when your internal strength is is pinching so hard to hang on that you are ready to *snap yourself* with just a small nudge.

This right here is peak content. Explanation and demonstration of a concept so vividly and clearly that it will be in the viewers brain forever.

this glass thing somehow
reminds me of us humans

it's the concentration of stress that's most damaging and breaking 💔

that's why everything in moderation is better

remember to take a breath
Take a break and release your stress from time to time don't let the bad stuff in your head accumulate

Life is worth living, never give up, we are in this together

There are bad people but there are still good people
The same thing goes with everything you'll find both the good and the bad in this place❤

This is actually very satisfying to see stress breaking througt the line
