That's why Ali stood over Liston and yelled for him to "get up". Some photographer caught this in a classic photo you see in many places, books, etc.

Whether he threw that fight or not Ali tapped his chin at the perfect angle. They fought more than once as well.

The punch was legitimate.

The knockdown was probably legitimate. It was a flash punch while Liston was coming in. Liston could take big shots, but this one surprised him.

The staying on the ground was definitely NOT legitimate. Liston could easily have gotten up. That he stayed down deliberately is not disputable. WHY he stayed down is the big mystery.

There's a nerve running along your jaw and if it is hit with sufficient force, it can cause disorientation and blackouts. Ali threw a punch and Liston walked right into it. There was a panel of boxers that were invited on TV back in the day to discuss if that would have been sufficient to do that kind of damage, and Rocky Marciano was one of the two panelists that said "Yes" that kind of a punch at that range would have done the job.

Rocky went 49-0, I think his judgement was sound on the topic

The fight was moved to Lewiston, Maine to avoid the knowledgeable eye of the boxing commissioner. The regulator in Maine is the agriculture department because of horse racing at the annual fairs. The fix was in big time- I moved to Maine from Philadelphia and the regulations on boxing is amateur hour.

Two things . First Ali (although among the greatest ever) wasn't a heavy puncher. He was fast with great footwork (when young) but he wasn't a heymaker.
And second - Sonny Liston wasn't of the ones to fall easily. This man has taken tremendous amounts of beating but wasn't known to be knocked out easily.
I'm maybe wrong, but this doesn't seem like a k.o. punch to me.
