If I remember correctly, it was meant to replace the jeep for recon purposes. All terrain, hover over tree lines and bushes, etc. It was also planed to have a 2nd seat for a recoilless AT gunner.

As far as I know, it was designed to be able to deliver a retaliation strike on the soviet union in case all airfields were inoperational due to a nuclear attack, but it was too unstable so they scrapped it, and after the invention of icbms, it became completely obsolete anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong.
