Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod review - Is the MT055CXPRO4 perfect for travel and general purpose use

This is a review of the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 - the 055 Series' carbon fibre 4 section tripod.

It's light, versatile and small enough to be put in carry on cabin luggage on a plane. So should this be the tripod you invest in? Currently you can pick this up for as low as £250 which is a bargain. Check out my review to find out more.

Thanks nice review thanks useful! Just bagged a three section carbon secondhand one from Mpb for £169 hope its as good as the pictures. Wont be selling my old first gen 055 though, one of those rare bits of gear that seems to last a lifetime

Thank you for making this great rundown video! I found an online deal for a used version of this tripod along with the XPRO 3 head for $425, which I think is reasonably good value. I've never owned a tripod anywhere near this price bracket before so my expectations are rather high.

Many thanks for the comprehensive review but please advise the difference between the 055 and the 190 Series, concerning maximum height, maximum working load of camera gear and stability. Best Regards.

My use case for the arm connector thingy is to hold up a monitor or an ipad so I can check focus and frame my shots better. It's actually quite handy.

I enjoy my Manfrotto, but will seriously consider this Carbon version.

Thanks very much for the video. I am looking hard for a tripod suitable for landscape work and don’t want to buy Chinese. Manfrotto tripods are therefore very much in the frame and I’m trying to decide between this one, the CXPRO3 and the 190s - all carbon fibre. Your video has helped me on the journey.

Very helpful review, thanks Hamer. This tripod is being sold at a big discount by Wex so an ideal time to buy. I have a Nikon 200-500 lens and from the reviews I've read the Manfrotto 055 is up to the job.

Thanks for that. Had mine for years. Solid, reliable and flexible enough for me. Any thoughts on cleaning and/or maintenance?

This doesn't have a hook in the bottom/middle part of tripod where you can hang a bag or something, right?

Got mine on sale at B&H for $230 (carbon fiber version) but when I got it, the center column exploded when I raised it for the first time, and I had to get a replacement. But now that I've heard the same thing from others who've owned it, I'm not sure I trust it enough to take as my only tripod when I'm traveling. So unfortunately I think this is a tripod that will remain in my studio only.

Just ordered the 4 section over the 3 section since I saved $120 and got it for only $320 after tax. I'm slightly worried that it won't be stable enough for astrophotography, though.

Thanks for the review. Is there a way to lower the tripod without the center column hitting the ground? (And without raising the center column)

Which would you recommend for general purpose, this of the 190 version?

Does your center column have any scratching or grooving on it? My Mt190cxpro4 ended up getting a small groove in the center column where the knob plate grips the column, and it developed scratching where it went up and down. How is yours doing in regards to the center column?
