I have a professionally weathered 31-128 30xx WR version of this loco and it's a grottily great model.

Mike, thanks for all the useful and interesting information in this and also in part 2.
At 1:11 the colour slide if the locomotive 23 looks to be one of those purchased by the extensive private coal lines in the Maitland area of Australia.
A great film of some of the ex ROD engines in operation as late as 1973 :
The other 2-8-2T locos stayed in coal use until the system closed in 1987. Some of the NSWGR 2-8-0 locomotives with the porthole side window cabs construced by the North British company also came under control of the ROD and were absorbed by the Belgian railways post war. A long story behind them.
Three of the ex ROD O4 types remain preserved in Australia compared to just one O4 in the UK.
Hope you find the vid of interest as most do.

Nice engine, and good on you for making sure the gunpowder vans were in the middle of the consist. One wrong move could result in a loud explosion.

The weathering as a whole looks nice, but I'm not convinced by the details. I'm definitely not an expert but I've never seen a locomotive with rusty buffers or rusty cylinder ends, and the valves on the top of the boiler are brass, which doesn't rust, full stop. There's also the large section of the left side of the boiler and firebox that looks unweathered. Is that supposed to be a damp area? It seems unlikely that such a large area would be damp, and surely the firebox would be warm enough to evaporate any moisture anyway?

What a nice model with some interesting details. Rerailing jacks, makes sence! The ROD is an interesting subject, you can have locomotives from all around the country in your pool. Not a complicated repaint either.

Idea for future video, locomotive crews. I noticed in all your older models you have a crew. And not the same cut and paste crew either. Maybe a video or available figures and fitting?

Now... Off to part2 :)

I like to see weathered locomotives but I can't bring myself to weather my own locos. I don't buy any weathered either.

I was lucky enough to drive the NRM's preserved 04 on the GCR, so will always have a soft spot for the class.

I've got a model of both the the 04 and the ROD version. Mine's in the green livery it sported when working in Holland after the war (was it after WW1 or 2? I think many of these - or at least the class 30 versions - served in both)
