The US space agency Nasa says it is “go” to launch its giant new Moon rocket next Monday.

The rocket, known as the Space Launch System, will send a capsule, called Orion, on an excursion around the Moon.

The launch will be a key moment for Nasa, which, in December, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the very last human landing on the Moon - Apollo 17.

Nasa sees return to the Moon as a way to prepare to go to Mars with astronauts sometime in the 2030s or soon after.

I can only imagine the crazies that will come out when this goes ahead. The flat earthers, the moon landing deniers, conspiracy theories will be awesome!

0:40 If you are good enough to be on the mission then you are good enough to be on the mission, regardless of black, white, man, women, person. Stop with the tick box exercises.

I'll be there. Even I'm nervous - can't imagine how the thousands of engineers involved feel.... going to be a great show!

I still remember vividly when man had landed on the Moon for the first time in 1969. I was a Japanese middle school student, and it seems to me that Mr. Armstrong had landed on the Moon yesterday. I`m a 66 years old retiree, but this Moon mission reignites my exitement when I was a junior high school student.

As long as the best people for the job are operating the craft that’s more important than a diversity operation!

One great thing about waiting a ridiculous 50 years to go back to the moon is the cameras and live feed will be sooo much better!! 🎥📹

People: "NASA has never been on the Moon"
NASA: "Alright, I will do it again..."

Why does it have to be about the "First woman and first person of colour"? why can't it be about the "best qualified to go"?

Only one Saturn V launched from 39B (Apollo 10). It did host a lot of Space Shuttle launches though. Most Apollo launches were at 39A which is currently leased to SpaceX for Falcon 9 launches including crewed launches.

I was so excited to read this. I've always lamented that I was born to late to experience the first moon landing, but now I may at least get to see one in my lifetime.

My great uncle worked with NASA in the 60s through the 90s and helped design the Hubble telescope as well as did work with the apollo program(s). I think its awesome we're going back.
