Edward IV’s portraits were done almost a century after his death, do we know what he really look like?
A big thanks to Ms. Steak, who pointed to the Yorkist traits shown by Henry VIII, we created an avatar which looked very similar to both Edward IV and Henry VIII. Could this be how he looked?

00:50 Edward IV, the Warrior King

Edward IV (1442-1483) was one of the most successful Warrior Kings of England and the maternal grandfather of Henry VIII.
After winning his first victory as a commander at 18, he was undefeated and won the English Crown twice through his conquests.
We currently only have two portraits In the National Portrait Gallery. These were painted between 60 and 100 years after his death by anonymous artists.
Fortunately, the two portraits were reasonably similar (80% similarity), allowing us to create an initial AI Avatar for Edward.
One of our viewers, Miss Steak, helped us overcome some of our hurdles when she pointed out Henry VIII had prominent Yorkist features.
Allowing AI to add traits captured in the portraits of Henry VIII, we aligned our initial avatar to include these Yorkist features. The resulting avatar closely resembled both Edward IV and Henry VIII.
The result was fabulous. Could this avatar be how Edward IV looked in real life?

How can we build a credible avatar for Edward IV, given that two anonymous painters painted his portraits many decades after his death? One of our viewers, Ms Steak, pointed out that Henry VIII demonstrated apparent Yorkist traits. Using Henry VIII’s portrait to supplement our existing portraits for Edward IV, we created an avatar that resembled the paintings of both Edward IV and Henry VIII, therefore exhibiting the key Yorkists traits. Could this be how Edward IV looked in real life?

In the one picture of Edward he greatly resembles Richard III.

How did the artists even know what to paint when making the paintings of Edward IV after his death? What sources exactly did they use or did they just kind of guess? Are the portraits of Richard III about the same age or older?
