A general overview of the Book of Leviticus contains rules and regulations related to religious and social life in ancient Israel. A particular emphasis is placed upon the Levitical Priests, who were responsible for carrying out many of these instructions, as leaders of God's people. The book itself derives it's name from the tribe of Levi, of whom the priesthood was composed.

The main theme of the Book of Leviticus is that God is Holy, and his people are to be Holy as well. As a result, there are certain guidelines his people were to follow in order to maintain this Holiness as it relates to religious and social life. All of this was designed to ensure they safeguard their relationship with "The Holy God of Israel."

The best known words from the book, which Jesus Christ Himself declared as the 2nd Greatest Commandment of all, and is the foundation of the "Golden Rule" is as follows,

"You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord." (Leviticus 19:18)
